Presented at the XIIIth
National Conference
held at Bhopal 18-21 September 2003
The Association
started in 1988 as a section of the ASI. It now has about 700
members including GI Surgeons and General Surgeons interested in
Surgical Gastroenterology. One of the main activities of the IASG is
its National Conference. The XIIth Conference was held at Hyderabad
(Organising Secretary: Prof RA Sastry, HoD Surgical
Gastroenterology, NIMS, Hyderabad). It was attended by about 300
delegates. Programme included Workshop, CME and main conference. A
new feature Case Capsule was introduced. The Organizing Committee
contributed Rs 50,000 to the IASG. The Conference being organized
at Bhopal (Organising Secretary: Dr Subodh Varshney, HoD, Surgical
Gastroenterology, Bhopal Memorial Hospital) is the XIIIth National
Conference. During the year, District Level CME was organized by Dr
Sunil Kumar, Tata Memorial Hospital, Jamshedpur in February 2003.
The IASG has been publishing the GI Surgery Annual under the
Editorship of Prof TK Chattopadhyay (HoD GI Surgery, AIIMS, New
Delhi). The 10th Volume was released at the Conference.
IASG Digital Library has been compiled by Dr Md Ibrarullah (HoD
Surgical Gastroenterology, Ram Chandra Medical College, Chennai) -
CDs were released at the Conference.
The IASG has three
Orations - Lucknow Oration, Chennai Oration and Veerabhai Oration
(delivered by the Immediate Past President). It also awards Best
Paper and Best Poster Prizes and a Travelling Fellowship. A KC Tan -
SGPGIMS Fellowship (funded by Mr KC Tan – Gleneagles Hospital ,
Singapore) including air travel, USD 1500 per month and 6 month stay
at Singapore was announced. Another T Nonami – SGPGIMS Award (funded
by Dr T Nonami) was also announced – it will fund an IASG member
whose abstract has been accepted for the IASG National Conference.
During the year,
elections were held for the post of Secretary and Joint Secretary –
Prof VK Kapoor (HoD Surgical Gastroenterology, SGPGIMS, Lucknow) and
Dr C Khandelwal, Patna were declared elected to the two posts,
respectively.
The
Constitution Review Committee (Prof N Ananthakrishnan, Prof SK
Mathur and Prof RA Sastry) has suggested amendments to the IASG
constitution.
